Escape to Freedom

Escape to Freedom

The Underground Railroad was a network of volunteers who risked their lives to help enslaved people escape to freedom. Share the Escape to Freedom Map, have students watch the first video, and then let them use what they learn to answer the question labeled “1”. If they get it correct, they can advance along the railroad. If they answer all five questions correctly, they’ll conclude a successful escape! If you are looking to teach your students about the Underground Railroad prior to to doing this activity, check out this video!

Teacher TipWhen you’re finished, reflect on learning by discussing the most surprising or interesting things your students discovered along the way! Here are a couple of questions to get your students thinking:
  1. The Underground Railroad helped lead slaves to freedom. Would you have been willing to take this risk without being certain you would make it to freedom?
  2. If someone asked you to teach them about the Underground Railroad, what would you say?

Awesome…it’s what you do!!!
